Default brake warning on new pads ...

Just bought an 2004 a6 2.7t quatro

The po said he just did the front pads but today i got a warning in the info panel. Visual inspection they look just like new pads.

Just curious if the po had used cheap pads like dualast or something could the sensor have tripped early? Should i just go ahead and replace the pads with good pads like ebc or is there a way to repair the sensor?

Is there any way to reset the code without a vag-com?

It's not a code, there's actually a wire embedded in the pads which is supposed to break when the pads get worn down, and that causes the warning indicator. This is a somewhat common problem - it could be the actual pads, or the wiring and plugs which connect to the pads. Search the forum and you will find many posts talking about this, plus how to short the sensor to remove the indicator permanently.

Ya it didn’t take me very long to fix. The wires coming out of the pad had disconnected from the plug. A few drops of solder later and no code Woot!!!

One related question, the bracket that the plug goes into, it looked like it should have an e-clip (or c- clip) inserted in-between the plug and the bracket to help hold it in place. Should there be one in there or am I making stuff up?

Actually there's a clip-like metal piece that rotates to lock the connector to the bracket. Lots of times people can't figure out how to release them and end up breaking the connector...
