Default Cam Chain Tensioner Removal Serious Problem!!

I have a 2001 A6 2.8 ATQ. The drivers side cam chain tensioner is bad. I go to remove it today and the pad on top of the tensioner is broken, It is cracked in a few spots and the tensioner tool will not compress the tensioner at all. Even worse thing is a bolt is stripped on one of the exhaust camshaft caps. So even if I wanted to place the car in service position and remove both cams to get the tensioner out this is not possible unless I drill the bolt that is stripped out. My question is does anyone know of any way to remove the cam chain tensioner by just removing the intake cam? I feel like drilling the bolt out would be risky and a PITA. I also feel like driving the car with a cam tensioner pad that is all broken is risky too. Any input or ideas would be great. Thanks
