Have a 2001 A6 2.7t standard transmission with about 170k on it.

I recently had quite a bit of suspension work done on it:

-Ball joints and control arms (lower/upper)
-Tie rods
-and most recently - CV axles

Just before I had the CV axles replaced today, I started to hear a louder click from the steering column only when the steering wheel is just turned slightly to the left and only while moving - its always only when the wheel is in that certain position.

Thought maybe the inner joint on the axle was going too, but after I picked the car up today, the noise is still there...any ideas on what would cause this?

 

u paid to have the axle replaced based only on a click noise from steering wheel?

 

No sir. Those were bad as well.

There was a separate clicking noise coming from the axle joints - I looked under the car and the boots on both outer joints were ripped. There was barely any grease left in them.

This is a totally different sound and issue.

Noticed today that it doesn't happen at highway speeds either - only about at 40mph and under.

 

ah fair enough then, honestly I know exactly the sound your talking about, i hear it too from my car if I listen carefully (it's quiet)

I also hear like little actuators moving or electric motors doing liek 2 second burst activations somewhere behind the dash when i go above 25mph..lol
