Clicking noises coming from the dash...
Hi Everyone,
I am considering buying a 2005/2006 A6 3.2 or A6 4.2. I'm just curious if anyone knows what that clicking noise is when you remove the key from the ignition.
Also, I see that some models come with the option of the 'Start Engine' button in the center console. How does this work? Do you still have to stick the key in the ignition and turn before you can start the car with the 'Start Engine' button? Or do you just have to be in the car with the key in your pocket. Some cars have this option where you need a 'card' on you and the car will start by pressing a button. I know the SL Mercedes has this feature. Thanks for any and all information.

RE: Clicking noises coming from the dash...
For the clicking it could be anything on that car, could be the temp flaps moving, electronic e-brake engaging ect. Probably nothing to worry about.
For the start button it recognizes the key in about a 20ft radius, for instance if you get within 20 ft of the car you can open the door without taking the key out of your pocket by lifting on the handle twice.
On that note it will recognize the key in your pocket to start the car as well, there are two detents to the switch, 1st detent is like the "ON" position, if you push the switch hard enough to engage both detents the engine will start.
When leaving the car you have to hold down the engine stop button to lock the steering wheel.

I have an 05 4.2 with the advanced key. It is a great car and the advanced key is a convenient option. You quickly get adjusted to the idea of just walking up to the car and starting it without reaching into your pocket. Since I don't use the key I can't help you with the clicking noise.
