Default Front caliper removal

I'm waiting for my Bently service manual to arrive, but will be a few days and could use some quick help. I have a 2001 A6 2.7T. I removed the 2 rubber plugs covering the caliper slide pin/bolts, but cannot seem to determine what tool to use to remove the bolts. I assumed they were hex bit, but none fit. Anyone know the answer on how to remove the caliper? I have searched all over, but cannot find THIS piece of info. Thanks in advance.

You mean the Allen Head bolts? They're prolly 7mm which is not standard in the sets. I found one at the local Farm store (Smith's Farm/Ace hardware). Look for a local Farm &Fleet or Fleet Farm.

Huh? There are two 21 mm bolts that you remove to remove the caliper.

Thanks for the replies. So to remove the caliper, do you remove the slide pins located behind the plastic caps or do you remove the large bolts?

Before you answer, let me tell you I am doing brake pads and rotor replacement, outer CV joint replacement and shock/struts replacement (plus timing belt, but that has no effect on this area). Parts will be here tomorrow, so I am just trying to get ahead by completing the teardown. I have done a bunch of brakes/shocks/struts etc on american cars, first time on an Audi. So given this info, which is the best way to remove the caliper?

Either way works. I usually remove the pins and make sure things slide easily, but removing the whole assembly gives you a bit more room to work.

The large bolts hold the caliper bracket to the hub assembly. You can just remove the slide pins which in my opinion, easier to deal with. And yes they are 7mm hex bits.

Depends on if you are talking calipers, or carriers (brackets)...

The caliper bolts are 7mm Allen. The 21mm are the carrier bolts as HX and Jim already said it.

Your doing allot of work under there..one little helpful hint is to spray all the road exposed bolts that you'll eventually be taking out with penitrating oil and give it some time to work..some of those bolts will almost seem welded they get so much grime and rust..that is unless you have a impact wrench
