Bump:
I just got the letter from Audi that the Audi A6 4.2 models (including RS and S) are now part of the recall.
Going to the dealership this week to get the nipples on the gas tank reinforced. Let's hope that will get rid of this issue once and for all.

2006 Audi A6 3.2 and also have a gas smell, but not bad and only occasionally. Bought the car about 3 months ago, 87K on it, almost perfect car outside and in and motor ran good. Immediately leaving the use car lot, check engine light came on. Dealership said they would look at it. Report came back as Evap. Dealership said it was the gas cap but didn't replace it. I haven't replaced the cap yet, but now wonder if it isn't the cap. Left lot with light off, but within a few days it's back on. Will the check engine light turn off on it's own even if the problem is fixed or do I have to get it cleared? I try and turn the gas cap a bit more now after filling up, but light hasn't gone off.

Also, recently noticed my fuel mileage fluctuates. Sometimes it's good highway around 30mpg near 80mph and others it's like 23 or 24 at same speeds in roughly same conditions. In addition, just recently noticed that when I stomp on it, the engine cuts out. Normal driving and it's fine. I can't tell it is fuel related or electrical related. It almost feels like a rev limiter is kicking in or the computer is limiting the engine like a governor.

Any ideas or may this be related to what you guys are talking about with the gas odor?

I have an 07 A4 with 48K. I have a gas/oil type of smell coming from the hood and I can sometimes smell it in the cabin. I can almost always smell it after parking my car in the garage and closing the garage door. What do you think my best course of action is, I do not have the know-how to fix it, my expertise stops at oil changes. However I have been doing a lot of reading and see that many other people with similar issues have brought it to the dealership only to find the issue wasn't fixed. I want to be able to give the mechanic I bring it to some more specific details to hopefully help him fix the issue the first time, rather than trial and error and thousands in repair costs. What are some things I should be looking out for based on the most common problems out there for this oil/gas smell. As I said earlier, my knowledge of this stuff is slim to none but i really don't wanna show up to the dealership with this issue only to get worked over. My car is also making a squealing noise, I am not sure if that is related or not but would assume it is related to some sort of belt. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

I too occassionally have a gas odor coming into my car and regularly (not all the time, but a decent amount) can smell it outside the car. Is this recall still in effect? was there ever any recalls on the 2001 Audi A6 2.7T that I can bring into the shop today and have it fixed?

I'd beg to differ, I just got a used '97 A6 Quattro that has a fuel leak. it's leaking on the exhaust system and traveling down to the front of the car

Default Please REPORT!

Do you currently or have you ever had a fuel tank leak that is NOT covered by the recall?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE use the following link to report the issue! nhtsa.com

Please include your vehicles year, make, model, trim and vin number! Even if you repaired the problem at your own expense, even if you no longer own the vehicle, even if you don't think it worth your time, PLEASE REPORT IT!

There are alot of models and older years that are not covered by the recalled because of the lack of reports even though they have the same PART with the same DEFECTS! Audi has amended the recall to include more models but there are still so many that have this issue!

Thank you for your time

Its most likely a problem thats not easilly diagnosed that i discovered 4 years ago that applies to 97-04 A6's with all available engines. Most technicians replace the large O-ring for the fuel pump or fuel sender which is located under the rear seat. 90% of time thats not the cause of the leak and or smell.
About 4 years ago i had problems diagnosing a gas odor from both the inside and outside of the vehicle on a 3.0L A6. I found a few drops of gas on the floor after it sat over night but i could not see where the leak was coming from. In order to find the leak i had to remove the entire rear end and drop the gas tank out. What i discovered was 4 EVAP lines attached to the top of the tank, two of which has broken off. The reason the lines broke off the nipples on the tank was because a small steel insert had backed out the fitting causing it to bend with the movement of the car, eventually breaking off the nipple and causing a leak after topping off the gas tank. It will still leak if you are driving with a half full tank causing the gas odor. Replacement of the gas tank is the only cure for this condition which is a very expensive repair. I have since replaced 50 gas tanks for the same condition and i have heard from my friend at the dealer that there may be a recall out for this condition now. I sent several pictures to audi over the years trying to get it covered for you guys, but i had no luck while i was still working at the dealership. I would check with your local dealership and ask if there is a related recall for repairing this issue, or at the very least buying an extended warranty that will cover this repair.

If you have any questions about the issue you can PM me.

Edit: oc audica supplied this recall statement from volkswagen: http://nhthqnwws112.odi.nhtsa.dot.go...8V157-4839.pdf
but the recall appears to only cover 01-04 which i believe should take care of it since audi has probably done more research on the issue. I can't remember the year models i worked on but i do know i have replaced tanks on 2.8L,2.7T, 3.0L and 4.2L's. The 4.2L A6 doesn't appear to be in the recall as of right now, so hopefully that will change. Better yet i could be wrong about the 4.2L altogether and you 4.2L owners won't have a problem.
