Default Half moon seals, camshaft adjuster seals, replacement

Hey All,
Me again. Do I NEED the special Audi tool to replace the half moon seals under the camshaft adjusters on the 2.7T engine? I've got the valve covers off, finally, but haven't tacked this part yet. Is there a way to cheat?
Thanks,
Gary

It is at least a write-up on AudiWorld (if I recall right) that mentions how to cheat changing those half-moon seals. If I find it b4 you, I'll post the link.

You need a cam chain tensioner tool to release the cam chain pressure. You don't have to remove the cam or the chain. Just release the pressure, loosen the bolts holding the tensioner, then pick out the seal and the gasket with a small pick. Use anaerobic sealant on the seal and the gasket. Loctite and Permatex both make it.

Thanks Hxgaser,
I've got the tool coming in the mail. While waiting, I've been working to clean up the PCV system. What a pita.

Yeah not to mention the breather hose is really brittle... As for the PCV suction, I hear that there is an updated version for about $20 or so, but I just cleaned mine with carb cleaner.

I just want to point out that you should not get the cheap Kinetik tool for this. I just had mine break and I need a new cam tensioner now. The bolt snapped in the tensioner and it made the tool break as well as one of the "posts" on the tensioner that holds the tool in place.

Edit: oops, didn't realize it was n old post
