MMI Software Issues
I have a 2013 A6.
In NAV I'm using Google Earth with Automatic set for determining Day or Night map display.
Often when I start the car in the day the map comes up in NIGHT mode even though the display is set to AUTOMATIC mode, which should bring the map up in DAY mode.
I have noticed that if I set the map to 'STANDARD' and 'AUTOMATIC' it remains in NIGHT mode until after driving a short time when it converts by itself to DAY mode. If I then switch from Standard back to GOOGLE EARTH for map type, it is in the DAY mode as it should be.
Seems like a software bug to me. Anyone seen similar behavior?

I believe, if you have your light switch is on Auto and it's daytime but your parked in a dark spot you'll get night mode until the headlamp sensor get some light they'll return to daytime mode.
At least that's the way they work on my 06

DAY-NIGHT on Map
I agree that starting the car in a dark environment will cause the map to first be displayed in NIGHT mode. I too expected the map to resume operation in DAY mode after moving the car from a garage or dark area during daylight hours. In my case this is not happening for GOOGLE EARTH view only. The STANDARD map does appear to respond this way -- and once it responds, then switching back to GOOGLE EARTH map view usually appears in the correct manner. This is why I think I am seeing a software bug instead of a 'light sensor' hardware problem.

Tell the dealer and ask for the most up-to-date software. Or demo the problem for them. If it's under warranty still (which it sounds like it is because its a 13.) Have them fix it -- for free.. an take a loaner out for a day. Easy fix.
