Quick A/C question

Quick A/C question
I just purchased a 2000 A6 2.8L
The fans blow but the air is not cold. I know it could be a number of things but I would like to see if the compressor is engaging before I attempt to charge the system. Can anyone please tell me where the compressor is located? Am I correct in thinking there is no actual "on/off" switch for the A/C?
thanks in advance!

The compressor is not going to engage if the system is low or high in refrigerant. Keep in mind that the outside of the compressor clutch is always spinning, and the clutch will engage if the conditions are proper. Follow the accessory drive belt and it should lead you to the compressor.
