Default Really sensitive accelerator

Hey guys...pardon me for intruding on your A6 forum...I'm an A4 guy myself, but my buddy has a 2003 A6 3.0L Quattro. He asked me to drive it today to help him figure out what's going on.

When I take off from a stop, the accelerator is REALLY sensitive. I press the pedal just a little bit, and nothing happens. Then just a little bit further and it takes off hard. And the 3.0L as you guys know, is really torquey (is that a word?) so it sets you back in the seat. When I say that I press the accelerator a little more, I'm saying that the pedal travels about an inch from nothing, to the whiplash it causes as it takes off. The whole process is not smooth at all.

Any suggestions?

I am no expert on the Audi by any means but I know these cars are throttle by wire meaning the accelerator pedal is connected to a small rheostat that senses position and relays that position to the engine. that said I have seen this same type of behavior in ford diesel trucks with the same type of accelerator pedal and it was caused by the potentiometer going bad and developing a dead spot. you should be able to unplug the wires going to the pedal and test resistence while slowly depressing the pedal - the amount of resistance should slowly change throughout the entire range of motion. Given the symptoms you describe you should see a delay in any change of resistance when you first begin to move the pedal if this is the problem.

What you said makes total sense, but I'd love to hear from someone who knows more about Audi.

Anyone? Anyone??

My 99 A6 does the exact same thing, but I have no idea why..
