The compressor on my 1998 Audi A6 just went kaput. The local german car shop says $1,400 to replace. We have maintained it perfectly. But it's only worth $3,000 today.

A new compressor is only $385 so I thought maybe I can replace and save $900-$1,000.

I was getting ready to order the compressor right up until I popped the hood.

Am I wrong in thinking we have to take off the entire front end /radiator of the his A6 to gain access to the A/C Compressor to replace? Or can we replace it from underneath?

Any suggestions/input and/or pictures would be greatly appreciated.

 

I just had mine replaced (to the tune of $1650) and they removed the bumper cover but did not have to put the front end in service position. They removed the oil cooler to get access. You will want to replace the receiver/dryer and all o-rings while you have it apart. If you are going to recharge it yourself, you need a VERY GOOD vacuum pump.
