does anyone know the total cost at an audi dealer for replacement of the torque converter? or maybe a ballpark cost at an indy shop? thanks

 

The 2.7T transmission is about 15 hours of labor to R&R plus cost of the torque converter.
Labor at the dealer is around $100 and hour or more.
Torque converter cost is around ~ $800.
Total estimated cost around $1800.

 

would this code mean that the torque converter needs to be replaced?

Un-fortunately thats exactly what that means, The TCC is sticking probably somtimes causes a harsh 1-2 shift.

I have a 2000 2.7 and it cost $2550 to get the torque convertor replaced at the dealership. They also replaced the gaskets, filter, and all the fluid. I paid $400 because the aftermarket warranty wouldn't cover the filter, gaskets and fluid.

 

My car is at the dealer getting the torque converter replaced right now. They also said around 15 hours for about a total cost of $3,000.00. He also said I would need a wheel alignment as well.

 

How long can you drive one before i completely fails? Just spent $1300 on a timing belt and water pump. Pretty soon its gonna cost more to keep the car on the road then the payment.

With all due respect - it is not the 1-2 gear clutch but the seal on lockup clutch failing - known Audi failure, there is a TSB..

 

You may have jumped the diagnostic gun...your code happened because the ratio between the tranny input rpm ansd the engine rpm is implausible. There are more causes than the Torque Converter (TC). First ... just plain old low fluid level is the most likely cause...next, the pressure control valve N218 could be faulty, allowing slippage, also problems with ATF supply to valve N218, the TC pressure valve could be faulty ,The TC clutch valve could be faulty, electrical activation of valve N218 could be faulty (harness problem). So be careful ordering a new TC, you need an expert to find the problem.
