How to replace rear marker light bulb

I'm having difficulty replacing a burned out side marker bulb on the rear bumper (driver's side). I read on another board that the lens, "...just pops out," but it seems to be on pretty tight. Am I just not pulling hard enough or is there another method to this? I haven't really tried pulling very hard, in case I accidentally break the lens, but if that's what it takes, please advise if you've done this before.
