Loud vibration when driving straight & turning left
I'm willing to bet this is the motor mounts that need replacing.
As I drive and get over say, 20mph, the car starts vibrating and gets stupid loud. If I pull the wheel to the right, the noise goes away completely as the weight of the car shifts to the left then comes right back as the car straightens out again.
I've been driving like this for about a week and a half as I work 60+ hours a week and haven't had a chance to bring it in. I have an appointment with the shop I usually bring it to on Tuesday, but if I can save the money, I'd like to just do it myself.
How hard is it to do this kind of repair? Or, how much should I expect to pay at an average VW/Audi garage?

I would inspect the motor mounts, and if you've removed the wheels lately check and make sure the lug bolt are all tightened down if one is loose on a front wheel it can vibrate really strongly and appear as though it were a broken mount.

I'll check out the lug bolts, but I'm pretty sure I went around and tightened everything the other day.
What types of symptoms would the CV joint show if it were bad?

sounds more like a wheel bearing. Actually, sounds exactly like a wheel bearing.
If not for the brake pads holding the rotor fairly solid, you'd be able to make the wheel wobble if you pushed on it while it was off the ground. Soo, if you can get your caliper off the rotor, you'd know right away if that was the issue, because things will start to get floppy.

Oh, problem with a wheel bearing is that you need a fairly powerful press and some pieces to press the bearing out of the carrier, so for most people, this is def. a shop job.
