RE: painting calipers...
get some wire brushes and just scrub the hell out of the calipers, use some wheel cleaner. once you get them clean, spray them with brake cleaner, then paint them however you like.

I put my car up on a lift; removed all four wheels; scrubbed the crap out of the calipers with large AND small wire brushes, brake cleaner, cloth rags, and carb cleaner; loosened the calipers one by one and hand painted them with brake caliper paint (I used This Kit). If you loosen the calipers and get them off the rotors, you can get in all the small spots so it looks real good. Just do all the edges and hard spots, then remount the caliper (don't have to torque everything, just enough to hold it on) and then paint all the big areas with the caliper on.
Then move to the other calipers. Fyi, the paint in that kit, it takes about 1½ hours before its dry enough to torque bolts and drive on them. I wouldn't joyride or anything, but its okay to drive home or to work and whatnot. If you go with Decals on the caliper, wait at least 24-36 hours before applying the decals.
