Default Tach stopped working

Hey all...!

New guy here, just stumbled onto the forum site. Very nice and am happy to be here. I have a question for you guys. I have a 2001 Audi TT Coupe.65K miles on it.About 2 weeks ago the Tach up and decided to stop working.When i rev it or drive it the Tach needle bounces a little bit.Any ideas how to fix..???

I have never heard of that i would take the cluster out and reinstall it and hope its a bad connection if not then your in for some real $$$ to properly fix it...

those wire harnesses into the cluster are pretty solid. I'm not sure where the signal comes from on the engine side, but i'd start there.

I would try to see if you can display the rpm's on something else (can some obdII's do that?), this would help determine where the problem is.

Most likely the battery is getting weak. I had a similar problem last month when the Tach started at 3K with the car off. Changed the battery and all was working again. Check the resting voltage on your battery (everything off) it needs to be greater than 12.5V.
