Default TT Tach quit working! 2001 23k miles....???

Help!! All of a sudden the tachometer is failing to register any RPM's at all when the car is running. Everything else in the cluster seems to be okay. The tach just sits on ZERO and doesn't move at all. Any ideas?

That happens when my battery's real low sometimes...if not then your cluster is screwed, time for a new one!

I'll check the battery charge level, but suspect it's okay. What's the cheapest route to get a "cluster fix"?

I wouldn't jump to cluster so fast. It could be an engine speed sensor.

The tach is driven from the transmission? Is that where the engine speed sensor is? How can it be checked?
Tks for the replies everyone!!

^ I just read the OP's post (for the first time??) - I would say cluster is unlikely as well, lol

Guys, where is the engine speed sensor located? How can it be checked? Does anyone know how much a new one is?
Thanks all!

I thought I was going to take this thing offloading.I only did it once and it was car camping on a logging road. I primarily use this car for ski trips and winter driving. So, an Outback is a better fit for me since I carry many passengers.Plus more a more modern car is what I would like for a winter daily driver.

def check the engine speed sensor, if it is broken the tach and odometer will both not work, if its just the tach then it could be a cluster issue

im not sure where the engine speed sensor is on the tt, but i encountered a problem on a vw golf and it was caused by the heat shield not properly covering the sensor
