Default Underside cover. Necessary?

I just finished changing my oil in my 2001 TT, and it might have been a manageable task but for that plastic shield under the engine bay. Is it necessary? Finding all the screw holes, especially when the metal clips can slide out of the way is a huge pain, especially with the car up on jack-stands. (It would be easier, I suppose, if the car were on a lift.)

So, just wondering if that cover does much. Thanks.

I bought my 2001 225 quattro recently and the "previous" owner took the tray off, I have just spent £50 to buy a replacement, in my opinion it is necessary. Have a good look underneath the engine, there's quite a number of damage susceptible items, plugs, sensors etc.
