Default 1996 A4 2.8: AFC engine: Engine Speed Sensor

I have no spark. No MIL with key on.
VAGcom engine speed data moves up/down with accelerator pedel movement (was told: wierd).

I suspect engine speed sensor wiring.

Can someone tell me how to best check the ESS?
- continuity (where does the wire from the sensor go to)?
- functionality (what can I measure/check on the sensor)?

Default Crankshaft Position Sensor - Engine Speed Sensor

The end of the sensor has a 3 prong square plug (from pictures at rockauto). Can someone tell me where this crank sensor (Audi lingo Engine Speed Sensor) plugs in so I can check (can trace it up). Found that it is supposed to show Resistance in Ohms 675 - 1.12k between center and one outer pin.
