Default 1998 1.8t starts then dies.

Hey guys I'm usually over in the B6 side but I now also own a B5 and she's got some troubles.

My problem: I just picked up a '98 B5 got it on the cheap and would like to turn it into something nice. It starts well but it dies within 3-4 seconds. I am familiar with the workings of the DBW system on the B6 but the B5 DBC is foreign to me so I figured I'd ask the experts. I'd appreciate some thoughts and possible solutions to this issue. I have ross-tech and I ran a scan, here are the results.

My main concerns are with the Engine and Trannsmission codes, if you guys could point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it, thanks.

Looks like some of your coil packs *may* be blown, or a vac leak, might need to do a Throttle Body Alignment.

As for the trans codes, someone could have spilled crap down the shifter, and shorted the tip switch, the other 2 are pedal related, and I actually had my kick down switch break today. Check down there, easy fixes.

First thing is clear all the codes, then try firing the car a few times and see which ones come back. The Teminal 30 voltage low can happen from a lot of things, including misfires or stalling. See what comes back and we'll go from there.

I have it on a trickle charge right now, it's been sitting for almost a year and the battery was pretty well drained. Going to re-scan and clear tomorrow when the battery has a full charge. I'll post up the results. Thanks for the help man.

if the car has been sitting for a year i would say its a fuel issue clogged injectors probably need to be cleaned out if it starts everytime and just does its gotta be fuel coil packs wont just kill the car

Agreed, although its no Audi, I just worked on a snowblower that sat for a year. Within a years time the gas turned to turpentine and the carb was bad. Sea foam works wonders dont forget !

Question

Thanks for the replies fellas, appreciate it. Here's the deal so far; pulled the car into the garage to warm it up enough to do a throttle body adaptation with vag-com. Adaptation took but car still just pops hasn't really "started" (by start I mean start and run for 2-5 seconds and then die)since earlier this after-noon (prior to TBA). I checked the fuel and it's okay and hasn't turned. I pressure test the fuel system with the key turned to run I hear the pump and it sounds good and the gauge hits 55 psi for 2 seconds then drops to 50psi. When I turn key to start position and crank and crank and crank the guage maintains 55psi-58psi. So I think the fuel and fuel pump are well. I have cleared my codes and recheck them the repeat offender is16487 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70): Signal too High P0103 - 35-00 - - So I pull the MAF sensor, assuming with the MAF out of the equation the ECM will default to some preset. It doesn't. Doesn't seem to change the frequency of the "pops" either. Now I'm thinking ignition coil between pins 1-3 I get .6 - .7 ohms and pins 1 and 3 to pin 2 I get OL, this is on all four coils. I'm assuming the coils are good. Finally I pull the ICM(?) attached to the air-box and it's set up on a heat sink in the air box, pins 1-4 against pins 1-5 my resistance measurements fluctuate with temperature so I'm assuming this is as intended and also the reason for the heat-sink in the air-box. They measure roughly 2.4M ohm at 75'. I would be thinking timing belt has skipped a tooth but I've had it start and run for as much as 10 seconds and it's not off time. I have auto-scanned the car again and it comes back with no faults, but I don't think it's run long enough to set any.
I really don't think it's relevant but I thought I'd mention that the exhaust has completely separated from the turbo at the flange, zero back pressure but it's a turbo so that shouldn't prevent it from running and idling, right?

To recap, Fuel and fuel pump are good, coils are good(?), ICM is goodi(?), MAF is in my garbage can, spark-plugs are new and gapped. I'm running out of ideas here. I believe the ECM is good but not sure, it's communicating with Vag just fine...Help, if you can, please.
