ive done a lot of searching. I have a 97 a4 quattro 1.8t auto. it came with two keys and thats it. I would like a flip key, and a remote to lock/unlock the doors. apparently it will work and my car did have a fob from the factory ( i called audi, and gave them my vin, but they said no way can use a flip key). any suggestions on which fob i need?

You'd need the key fob for the B5. They'll know which one. It'll probably cost you around 200 and some change to get it done at the dealership (including the cutting).

There are keys on eBay for cheaper but I heard those keys are made from a different material and at times dealerships will refuse to cut the key because of the material. If you can find a third party who can perform laser cut, you can go ahead and call them. You might be able to do it for cheaper this way but it's no guarantee.

 

I would call another dealer. I don't understand why you can't use a flip key fob.

 

I have a 97 as well and the remote that comes with our car is not a flip key. All it does is lock/unlock. The flip key remotes started with 98s.

I've heard mixed stories about whether it is possible to use a flip key with our car or not. Some have said yes, but you have to make sure it is compatible with the car, and I have never found anything definitive about that. Others say it is just not possible.

I gave up and just use my key and no remote. If you find anything out make sure to update us.

 

I have a 97 1.8t quattro and just did this. The dealer said it could not be done! Not the first time they have been incorrect. The OEM fob for this car is MZ2 410 819 4 (2 button + panic, no flip key). I bought a flip key fob MZ2 410 819 6 4 (2 button + panic) off eBay and a HAA blank key. You can get the key cut at a locksmith shop that cuts 'laser' or 'sidewinder' keys. To replace the key, tap out the retaining pin that holds the key. I believe you can also use a flip key fob MZ2 410 819 6 3 (3 button + panic) but the truck unlock button will not work on our cars. Also, with all remotes, you will have to 'program' the fob to the car; the process requires 2 keys (1 for the ignition, 1 for the drivers door) as well as the fob. All this info can be obtained by searching the Internet. The central locking ecu is the same in our car as those built in 2000, so why won't it work! And we don't have immobilizers as well!

You might be getting a "no" answer to cutting a 97 key because the early 97's were a saw blade style key, like a house key. But if yours is the laser/sidewinder style key like the 98 style then yes you can update a 97 to the switchblade/flip style key.

 

Jeff, what kind of VIN break up are we talking here? I have never seen a B5 with a house style key. My 97 has the sideways laser cut key.

 

It's the really early 97 A4. It looks like anything with a production date of 6/30/96 with Vin # up to 8D T 400000 and older would use the sawblade style key. And production date 7/96 with vin 8D V 000001 and later would use the laser cut key style. In searching history on these early A4's I wonder how many there are in the US.

 

I asked a tech that's been around a while in our shop. Turns out it's the 97 car that has the really thin 2 button (#30 earlier style 97) remote that can't be updated to the one piece flip style key. And the reason is the frequency of the remote is different than that of the flip style remote. The thicker remote (#34 or 35 either one) from the 97 year cars vin 8D V 000 001 and on can be updated to the one piece flip style key and remote combo.
