Default Bad Catalytic Converter

VAG-COM Version: Release 311.2-N

Control Module Part Number: 8D0 907 557 P
Component and/or Version: 1.8L R4/5VT MOTR HS D07
Software Coding: 06201
Work Shop Code: WSC 06335
1 Fault Found:
16806 - Main Catalyst: Bank 1: Efficiency Below Threshold
P0422 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

I cleared the code, went to inspection and failed because of readiness. I cleared the code before I went. Oops? I would have failed anyway.

My issue is that I have been clearing that exact code for the last 6+ months, but the code always comes back anyway with the check engine light. After driving around and coming home, everything in the readiness option of VAG has "Passed" except for Evaporative Emissions which is "Failed or Incomplete" I have a new cat on the way, but why did the original go bad? Just mileage? I am at 136xxx miles.

I have read about 02 Sensor voltages needing to be within specific limits. Which measuring blocks am I looking for and which values am I looking for to know that my sensors are OK? Block 032 shows values of 3.1% and 2.3% for leaning.

On the longer drives I will get the rotten egg smell every so often. I always purchase gas from the same station. The ignition control module has also been replaced a few thousand miles but I don't believe that to be relevant.

Thanks!

Yeah, cat converters usually only last so long. Just replace it and you should be golden.

Why the hell do they fail so much on Audis? I've had several Accords and never once had to replace a catalytic converter.

Because audi's have problems with miss-fires, miss-firing engines increase the temperature in the cat because raw fuel gets into the cat then ignites frying the thing. Of course people still drive the car even when the check engine light is flashing, so its half ignorance.

Hey thanks auditech79 for taking the time to explain that. Is it a design issue with the coil packs that facilitates the misfires?

It depends on what year and engine you have. Pre 2000 A4 1.8T's have faulty ICM's (ignition control modules) and the years from 01+ use a push in coil which has the ICM built into it which either malfunction or fall apart. 2.8L engines almost never miss-fire unless there is a vaccum leak or faulty MAF sensor.
