Default headlight relay???

The other night i was driving, i had my headlights and fog lights on and they both went out at the same time. tail lights and all other power functions normally. The weird thing about it was when i hold the high bean lever all the way back (as if you have all high low beam on at the same time) the lights go on. Any guesses on what this may be relay etc. I am new to this forum and need some help thank you

The headlight stalk switch is bad most likely, just search it theres a writeup on how to put a new one in and how to fix it. From what i remeber there isnt a relay or something its a direct switch so thats why the switch goes bad im not 100% on that but im sure its a very common problem for the switch to go bad.

Dallas u were right.. i spoke to an Audi tech and he said that it is most likely the problem and said it is common on a4's. He explained that is is a DIY project but requires removal of the steering wheel.

This also happened to me..switched out headlight switch and it worked.....for only a couple hours, back to the drawing board.

Everything was fine until i switched from high beam to low beam and now no low beams or fog lights...just parking lights and high beams only if I pull the lever back for the high beams. I'm running out of patience , is this a Audi recall issue..what steps do I need to take...where is the relay located????

There is no relay. Headlight current goes directly through the switch. The contact is a small copper rail in a plastic piece that (when the lows and front/rear fogs are all on), has 23 amps flowing through it. The heat melts the plastic, lifts the rail, and breaks contact with the switch outputs. It's a design flaw, there is no recall, and your switch is dead in this manner. The highs work when pulling the stalk because it uses different contacts when toggled that way, and doesn't use the regular light contacts. Replace or repair your switch.

I'm having the same problem. Sometimes the lows refuse to turn on, and sometimes they decided to turn off randomly. The parking lights and highs work fine though. We'll see what I can do.

As I mentioned earlier I replaced the whole switch (turn signal combination arm with cruise control, etc..and everything was fine for an hour or so and the problem came right back...no headlights OR fog lights
