Default power steering problem

ok well turns out the rack is bad, the pump is all but fucked and its leaking fluid like crazy, im going through about 3 bottles of fluid a day...

i dont have the money to fix it, and i dont have the money to buy fluid day in and day out like this... my question is, since rack is already bad and pump is already pretty much gone too... what damage will it do besides just no power steering if i just stop filling it up?

well with no fluid, your pump could literally explode from over heating. the pump is cheap if you go to car-parts.com and find a used one. the swap isn't too hard either. the rack on the other hand needs a lot of patience and another person preferably. you could get the rack done at a shop and do the pump yourself when you save up the money.

You'd have to get a different serp. belt and re-route it somehow, I'd say prolly not worth the trouble.

just buy a used working one and replace it.. I got mine for $50 shipped and you could probably easily get one cheaper.. mine completely broke because I didn't keep it filled enough

I only had to replace the pump. you can pretty easily find racks for under $200 used.. have you tried any of that fluid that's supposed to stop leaks? might not do anything but I guess it couldn't make things worse than they already are..

unfortunately you have to keep both the pump and steering rack filled or both could seize.
