Ready to pull my hair out! Help!
I've got a 98 2.8L with a pretty major oil leak issue, and after a bunch of research I'm pretty sure the crankcase vent. system is to blame. I read that cleaning/replacing the suction pump valve can significantly reduce the pressure and oil leakage. So I located it at the back of the motor near the air intake and the thing looks clean as a whistle. Upon further research, the pictures I found look nothing like under my hood. My valve covers have no bulging hose hook-up on top for the vent system. To my untrained eye, the only hose hook-up is a small one on the front of each flat top cover, with the hose running in front of the silver manifold which does have some gunk in it. I can't seem to find any info regarding this setup. Does this sound familiar to anyone? If so, how do I go about cleaning my vent system to relieve the crankcase pressures? Am I even on the right track?!

Didn't load the images the way I wanted, but at least you can see what I'm talking about...
On this one you can see the black plastic hose going from cover to cover in front of the intake manifold.
This shows a close up of my passenger valve cover, which doesn't have the bulging breather hose hook-up I keep seeing in all the photos online

I can only see the last pic. It's hose in lower right corner of pic. Plugs into end of vc. I'm not near my car but think it routes across to other vc, going next to coil on its way, then (I think) two more connection closer to firewall, back by all the vac hoses

Cool, thanks man. Yeah, I kept searching "98 audi a4 2.8L" and all the motors had the same bulging valve cover-I was starting to think I had a Frankencar. I kinda thought the 5V meant per cylinder, but wasn't sure I'm no mechanic, so I'm bumbling around in the dark half the time! How much time/work am I looking at to replace the breather hose?

I'm no pro either. I had never swapped one out either. I didn't take long, but I do recall that getting old one off was more frustrating than installing new one. I ended up just cutting some/most of the old off vs. trying to get all the clip things to release and pull off.
