Default VAG code error Please Help

Hi, I own a 1997 A4 2.8. CEL came on and I had someone check the code and it was P1206. I looked it up and it said P1206 Injector circuit open/shorted - cylinder #6 or Cyl #6 Fuel Injection circuit electrical malfunction.

Some info: It idles poorly between 650-800 RPM. When I start the car it runs ok until it warms up. Then it idles poorly. When I accelerate it "chugs" as if it isnt getting gas. Now it chugs worse under 2000 RPM with it worse the lower it is. Between 2000 and 2500 its better but still does it and over 2500 RPM it isnt really noticable but it definitely lack power.

I really do not know where to start to look in order to repair. I first tried to do a search on the forum and could not find anything, before I posted.

I am by no means a mechanic so any help would be appreciated as I would like to save some $$$ by doing it myself if possible.

Thanks in advance.

Well, if you want a quick and free way to make sure its not the injector, you can swap the injector to a different cylinder and see if the fault code moves with it. Kinda like pulling the old coil pack swap a roo. If it does move, change all the injectors and get an intake treatment done, i would imagine there is a ton of carbon build up on the intake valves and other areas of the intake system. Changing parts like the fuel filter every 100k isn't a bad idea as well.

Thanks for the response. I had the car rescanned and it came back with the same code but a different desription. It said Manufactures Control Air Fuel Metering.

Dont know if that helps in a closer diagnosis

Thanks again

Its the same thing, just they gave you a more generic description of it this time, go with your initial description.

Hi,

Thanks again for all the responses. I finally had the car checked and it is the #6 injector. The circuit is open and the injector needs to be replaced. Now I have a couple questions.

I do not have a lot of experience but feel I am mechanically inclined, and have done some minor repair work. I want to replace the injector myself since my most trusted mechanic wants $525. I am apprehensive though "only" because I am dealing with fuel and the potential serious problems if done incorrectly. Anything else and I wouldnt be asking.

So... am I overly concerned about this and how difficult is it? Can someone point out the issues I should be focused on when doing the replacement. I want to replace all 6 injecotrs while I have it disassembled.

And... since OEM injectors seem to be quite expensive and I have seen some remanufactured ones that I can get all 6 for almost the price of 2 OEM. They come with a warranty - but I realize a warranty is worthless if your constantly replacing (time and dependability have value)

Thanks again in advance.
