Default Strong Oil/Fuel Odor when Stopped

I just picked a 1996 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro which I am thrilled with. It has 195,000 miles but is clean as a whistle with maticulate service records. When I am driving slow or stopped there is a strong oil/fuel odor that is exceptionally strong when I open the driver door. I'm wondering if it could be an exhaust leak. I'm not sure about the catalytic converters as I thought this would be an egg odor. My cousin thought it could be the PCV clogged.

Could anyone provide comments or point me into a direction for resolution.

Thanks!

That smell is oil burning on your hot engine, your valve cover gasket is leaking and is long overdue for a change, seals probably need to be replaced also,so check into the seals, along with the valve cover gasket.

Engine Light - EGR Deficiency Low Flow

I also brought the car to Midas - they said bad driver side cat converter $1300 estimate
Car X confirmed cat which they let me look with them. Its definately bad, they said they can throw a universal on for $350.

I swear i'm only getting about 10 mpg and I'm going to park the car until I get some feedback. I would like to do this myself.

Would this part work? Can I get it cheaper?

This part appears to bolt in. Anyone know if this is a DIY job? Any recommendations based on my post????? Much appreciated! I like working on this car, once this is done it will be mint. Please any suggestions are appreciated.

I checked for oil leaks and did not detect anything significant, although I believe I will be replacing the seals anyway.
