Default A4 Expensive Timing Belt replacement

Has any one had this same problem with expensive timing belt replacement?
I took my 2002 3.0 litre A4 @ 45000kms for normal service with Audi dealer and was told it needed the timing belt replaced as part of the scheduled service. Bought the vehicle new and was running well. Apparently timing belt neeeds to be replaced every 4 years. The service cost was $1,500 and the timing belt replacement cost $2,900+. Total cost $4,400+. Great car but expensive to keep on the road.

wow thats rediclious, if they charged you 4,400 jsut to replace the timming belt you got ripped off bigtime. Im pretty shure the with parts and labor a timming belt on a 1.8t should cost:

Independent shop 700-800
Audi Dealer 1,000-1,1000

can u post up a coupy of the incoive to see what they charged u so much for

Sorry, but youv'e been hosed...severley. I just got off the phone with my buddy that is an Audi tech, and he said first all, that belt isn't called out until 105k miles (check your owners manuel under service) Second, the labor is the book says nine hours..do the math at 90-120 bucks an hour, depending on where you live. Third...the belt cost $99.
Do you know an attorney? No LOL

NO that price is dead on actually.
You guys have to understand the 3.0L engine is a completely different beast! The 1.8T and 2.8L don't even come close to it as far as difficulty to work on.
The parts are also much more expensive, an average timing belt job on a 3.0L engine at my old dealer was around $2,600 (with water pump ect) at $130 an hour.
But your dealer is messing with you, it isn't needed until 80k. DON'T wait until 90k to do it either! I've seen way too many 3.0L engines in my shop with snapped timing belts in the 90k region. That repair with new cylinder heads is well over $10,000.

Definitely DID NOT get hosed. Audi Tech is right. The 3.0L is a pain in the *** to change the timing belt on. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more difficult to service than a 1.8T. That 4k price range is pretty acurate for a 3.0 Audi.

Hi

That price is really over the top but l have a question? I have a 05 3.0 vert with 17,000 miles and my wife plans on driving 20,000 miles a year mostly highway driving so if it's highway driving will her car still need to replace her timing belt at 80,000 miles?
And is the cost for a 05 3.0 the same cost as in the earlier years?
One more thing based on what l have read the cost will be in the $4600 dollar area so it will prudent for me to get the Audi extended warranty for $3000? And l also read that the extended warranty will not pay for the timing belt unless it goes! Is it possible being that she will be driving it on the highway that the timing belt could last over 100,000 miles?

Thanks

Alan

The warranty will not cover the timing belt service. Have the belt
changed at 90K mi. Find an independent shop.

Hi CrazyHawk

So the bottom-line is if the timing chain breaks then l will be coveredunder the Audi warranty, but if not l'm on my own. And tht's how they get around it. I was going to get the Audi Pure Protection package for an additional 2 yrs and 50,000 miles at a discounted price of $3200. But now l'm not so sure it's worth it.

Pure Protection package? Is that just an extended warranty, or something else as well?

When I bought mine, I got a 2 yr/50k mile extended warranty from Audi and it cost the dealer $1000 (ie, that's what Audi charged them for it).
I know this because my dealer messed up and posted the wrong price online. So during the course of the (somewhat heated) negotiations I found out what all their costs were. Worked out pretty well for me

For $1000 my warranty paid for itself -- but you'd have to have something pretty catastrophic go wrong to make the $3200 worth it.
