i've got 2003 a3 2.0fsi with what sounds like the same problem. under light/moderate acceleration over aprrox 60km/h i get a strange fluttering/rattling noise from the drivers side as far as i can tell. if i lift my foot off the accelerater or keep a constant speed the noise goes away. it's still under the dealers warrenty so is going into the mechanic for the 3rd time (different mechanic this time) to try to be fixed. i'll keep updated on how i go.

yes! thank you lol the fluttering noise is the word ive been trying to think of. ive been trying to take a video or sound clip but wind noise is too much to get an accurate sound of it. you pretty much have to know what your hearing for to pick it out on the sound clip.

Ok so I did the timing belt. I was looking at the old tensioner and idle pulley, if I spin it it makes the kind of noise I was trying to explain. There was also play in it. I can't hear the sound now, but it's raining so I will confirm that tomorrow or something.

Another question I have is if the timing belt tensioner is too tight there would be a whining sound. But what exactly does that whine sound like and is it very easily to distinguish?

got my car back from the mechanic and it's still making the same noise so it looks like i'll be taking it back in after i get back from my holiday in a couple of weeks. thank god i'm not paying for this.
on the plus side they did manage to fix a couple of other rattles that the car had. gotta look at the positives

there was a rattle from the interior behind the dash and one from the tray that runs under the car that protects the underbody due to a missing bolt. nice to have them sorted but frustrating the original noise is still there. the car is going back in on thurs 4th april, so fingers crossed it'll get sorted then.
