Temperature gauge not working, sensor? What else?
Hi to all,
I bought my A4 1.8T a couple of months ago and I'm really happy with it, except with the mileage I'm getting from it, I'm getting 19-mpg average mix driving, was hopping for at least 24mpg
Read around possible reasons like spark plugs and air filter, replaced those. Another possible reason was/is the temperature gauge not working, my wasn't working, had the temperature sender sensor replaced today and still doesn't work. Anything else that I need to look at to have the temperature gauge working? Maybe a faulty dash?
Thanks in advance...

Does the engine run okay? Does it overheat at all? Sounds like maybe the thermostat could be stuck open.
Also, a faulty coolant temperature sensor can cause all sorts of weird issues. That's a cheap fix that's worth trying.
As for the mileage, are you using premium gas, at least 91 octane?

Car runs fine and doesn't overheat. Yesterday the coolant temperature sensor was replaced and still not working.
Only use 93 - 94 octane gas (Super)
I bought the sensor at a local auto part, I'm going to try the sensor from the dealer and will also change the thermostat.

as for gas milage. i never thought fuel would make that much of a difference where you got it. Chevron and 76 get the same as our generic gas here. shell gas i get about 8 more mpg according to my on dash display.
i thought it was a coincedence. but i tried a couple times and every time the shell gas got me way better gas milage. worth a shot

ALLDATAdiy.com is great. Just google a discount before purchase. It is what mechanics use. I was surprised at the in depth troubleshooting and everything. And by the way it says check the (ECT) on coolant pipe for my 1998 Cabriolet, but I have a V-6 2.8L (Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge)
