Mine uses Mobil Clean 5000. Synthetic is extra $ but you want to use synthetic for sure with a 1.8.

Thanks but I thought I should go synthetic. I'm confused. The Mobil website says it is a non-synthetic and it is not a synthetic blend?

I use Castrol Syntec full synthetic. I like it better than Mobil, and mycar seems to run smoother. Dealer shouldn't charge you extra cause the 1.8t calls for full synthetic. As for filters, I use the standard Audi filters and thats th only thing a dealer will put in..

The dealer uses Castrol synthetic oil on all 1.8T A4's. 2.8L and 3.0L engines get regular Castrol5W30.

Really the new manuals have 5W-40 spec weight for them? I would also always go Syn with these cars, filter wise OEM is great (Mann) and for 14.00. I use Napa gold...love their filters, but I have the 2.8 and don't have to worry. Heck you can order Pen from ECS tuning with the OEM filter for a good price. They are in Ohio and orders come next day...ground.

I go crazy and put 5W-40 Amsoil in mine. I don't know if its true, but my chain ten quit rattling in the cold with this stuff.

I don't know...I just know there have been letters mailed out and other members posting about it. The issue is the 1.8T needs more oil...like a quart or two. The dealer is dead wrong on the oil changes...change it at 5K no matter what. Oil isn't the issue, its the filter and if your getting messy with the filter change....just do the oil too.

The local dealer closest to me uses Castrol Syntec. I believe this is what all dealers use on the 1.8t Personally, I use Mobil 1 0w40.

Yeah I think everyone should DIY oil changes...and I too would go heavy weight. If you go to audi.com and type in oil. Read the new 502. oil spec....There is a large number of 40 weights in there. Also having a zip lock bag to cover the filter before you break it loose....is nice

My audi dealer used 5w40castrol syntec. It's funny that the manual tells you 10k every service change and I called the dealer one time and they said you are supposed to change it every 5k. I always changed it at 10k and when my warranty ran out I've been doing 7500k with the 0w40 mobil one.

3k? Don't be ridiculous, regular oil lasts that long or longer (more like 5k). If you change it on a regular basis 7500k should be fine.

The mobil one filters have been tested up against the purolators and the purolators had more filter media (indy test on the internet where the guy cut all these different brands of filters in half. Haven't seen the mann though. Have used one mobil one filter and this is my first purolator filter.

I got the purolator at Discount Auto Parts. It's the same size as the Mobil one 301 or whatever number it is. Not sure why you are having a problem finding out.

I talked to a couple dealers in the Pittsburgh area and they recommend 5W40. The manual for my 2004 A4 states 5W30, but 5W40 is the European spec oil and is not as readily available in the US. I use Amsoil 5W40 every 5K miles. The additives are still in Amsoil. I am a bit leary of Mobil 1 since I have read that they are taking out their additives (which helps with the life of the engine). Walmart is most likely helping this by pressuring manufacturers to make cheaper oil. Gotta love the US mentality.

You should always go thicker oil during the summer and thinner during the winter. Mobil one 0W40 and 0W50 for summer. and 5W40 during winter.

Default Castrol vs Moble

I reciently purchased a 2001 a4 2.8 and from what I could find Audi recommends SAE 0W-30 ACEA A2 or A3.

I can get the Castrol Syntec in SAE 5W-30 but it has an ACEA rating of A1, the lowest rating and is not recommended for performance engines.

I can also locally get the Moble 1 SAE 0W-40 European Engines formula which has an ACEA rating of A3, recomended for performance engines.

I have always prefered Castrol but if the european rating is poor I can't use it.

Is the moble 1 the best option ?
