Default What Kind of Engine Oil Does The Dealer Use on A4

Hi All,

1. What Kind of Engine Oil Does The Dealer Use on A4 (Castrol?)?
2. Do you all use the Castrol Syntec 5W-40? I can only find Castrol Syntec Edge Titanium 5W-30 in the local store?
3. What is the different between 5W-40 and 10W-40? Which one should I use?
4. Should I change oil in the dealer (my B7 is still under warranty)?

Thx!

My dealership uses Castrol Syntec 5w40. I think other dealers use other VW 502 approved oils.

Most people use Castrol 5w40 or Mobil 1 0w40, both of which are VW 502 approved.

It's fine to have the dealership change your oil, but you can get it done someplace else, also.

if you're comfortable doing it yourself you can save some money but still use quality stuff. i bought a five-pack of Mann brand filters from ecs tuning and use mobil 0w-30 from walmart.

the 0w-30 says it improves your gas mileage. i cant say for certain that it does since i started using it in the winter and my car gets worse mileage in the winter and better in the summer. but i have been consistently getting 27-30 mpg with mixed driving. and that oil is full synthetic and only $25 for a 5qt jug at walmart.

the difference between 5w and10w is the viscosity (thickness) of the oil. but it only really matters depending on your climate. 5w oil is recommended for colder climates since it is thinner and provides better starts and warms up quicker.

the 5w provides better cold startup protection than the 10w, The 40 is recommended over the 30 since the 40 has a higher heat tolerance. These turbo's run hotter than a non turbo engine, and the 40 resists breakdown due to heat better.

I asked my dealer service dept the same question (Roger Beasley - north Austin). They use 5w40 Castrol Syntec. The Audi Care plan (if you have it) covers oil changes for scheduled services (5k,15k,25k,35k,45k), but anything in between or after would be on your dime.
He did say getting oil changes every 5k is a good idea on a turbo charged car.

castrol syntec apparently.. because i mentioned mobil 1 and the dealer said that they "didn't use it because it made the engine knock more".. really?
