Know issue starting in 2002 Audi with 2.0 liter turbo motor was told normal to burn 1 quart every 600 miles. So think about it if first oil change is at 5k your next service is 15k then Audi telling me it's normal to go through over 10 quarts of oil in between their recommend service. I think not and check google how many lawsuit about oil compustion and new 2015 in the owners manual telling you how to break in the engine but never with previous models. I have a 2008 a4 but just to let everyone there was a issue with 2009 2.0 liter turbo motors getting a bad batch of crankshaft bearing bolts which will cause a knocking noise during acceleration from a stop and sometimes during down shift to first gear or slowing down to a stop.

Just wanted to share my experience with everyone here. I own a 2009 A4 2.0T and had oil consumption issues. I first noticed the issue when the car had about 30,000 miles, but at that point it was burning 1 quart every 5,000 miles so i was not too concerned. It gradually got worse and I eventually took the vehicle in when it had 55,000 miles (closest dealership 300 miles away). At this point it was burning a quart every 1,500 miles. I paid for the first portion of the consumption check out of pocket. Did not feel comfortable driving 300 miles once the engine said low oil and explained that to the dealership, but they didn't do anything about it. The problem continued to get worse and a year later they finally put a dealership in my city. At this point there was 74,000 miles on the car and it was burning much quicker, so I took it in and they said they ran some tests on it. I still had my paperwork from the work done at the first dealership and they honored that and I skipped through the first portion and they tested the consumption and found it was burning a quart every 340 miles. I opened a claim with Audi customer service and was able to get the 2nd step of the process of replacing the pistons and piston rings in full (usually $3,000 replacement cost). I don't know if I am lucky or if others are finding Audi forgiving with the issue or if my case was so severe that they acknowledged there was a problem.

I am considering a 2011 A4 2.0T MT6 tomorrow and the many threads about excessive oil consumption concern me. I can probably accept a quart every 1000 or so, but not at 600 miles. Heck, I often drive more than that in a day in my A6 and I cannot imagine having to add oil in the middle of a trip (PS - the A6 at 231k miles burns next to no oil between 7-8k oil changes). So - how prevalent is this problem in the 2011? Is it every vehicle or am I reading about the problem children here and most 2011s burn very little oil?

You were one of the lucky ones that piston rings repair was free of charge but keep checking your oil because have seen some vehicle after the repair was ok then when 10k or more then problem starts again. Then Audi will replace the whole motor but have to do the oil compustion from the start and pay out of pocket just to confirm the issue.

The best solution is to sell your Audi as it is very clear that the manufacturer will not attand to these problems. I did this and upgraded to a BMW. The BMW is not consuming oil at all

Unfortunately we don't have the data to see the degree of oil consumption by year. Just so we are on the same page I consider oil consumption to be "any loss of oil as measured on the MMI within 5000 miles". I also believe it is a design flaw with this engine and was not corrected with the block change in 2009. Now talk about bad parts and put blame on the supplier which means to me that the Audi quality control is not very good. How many years and number of engines can you continue to put defective parts into. Don't you think Audi has a record of all of these parts and what engines have them. Don't make the assumption that newer engines don't have the same problem.

I repaired this vehicles for 13 years and calling Audi support with vin number. Yes we got a bad batch of crank shaft bearing bolt for this vin to this vin number. So if Audi knew by vin to vin then why not check or fix the problem but let's see what happen maybe not all of bolts will fail. All new engine has some design error but 2002-2007 cam follower and high pressure fuel pump premature wear but the 2008 has same part numbers for cam follower & high pressure fuel pump. Audi said they corrected the problem on the 2008 2.0 liter turbo motor so does that make senses to you?

I bought A 2009 A4 quattro. The tail pipes are covered with a heavy black soot. The car had 57k plus miles on it when I bought it. So far the need oil light has come on once. I have put less than 2k miles on the car. Should I put my my local Audi dealership on notice ( I did not purchase the car from them )? Should I contact A of A before I put any more miles on the car. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Robert

Please someone post the phone number for AoA that gave them good feed back regarding the excessive oil consumption on their Audi. Or you may email it to me with any other suggestions. riosrobert22@yahoo.com I am new to this forum and I hope not breaking any rules. Thanks Robert
