Default how can i remove the black rubber from the wiring loom

i do some work for a company which provides TDI engine conversions using the audi a4 engine and loom i strip the loom witch in very time consuming as i need to remover the black rubbery block and separate the wires can anyone please let me know what the black rubbery horrible annoying stuff is that binds the wires together and possibly a solvent that will loosen/dissolve this annoying black s**t hopefully without doning any damage to the wire casing what i mean any help is much appreciated
