Default Auxiliary Water Pump 4DO959617A

Looking for some Audi wisdom.

I have a 2000 Audi A8 that I use in when snowbirding Arizona. It has recently developed an annoying "whining noise" that I have isolated as the Auxiliary water pump. I have looked at replacing it but the $1300.00 cost for the replacement pump stopped me cold. I'm wondering if just disconnecting it is an option? Does anybody know exactly what this pump does? Is it essential? Would it harm the motor to disconnect it and just run off the main water pump?

Looking forward to your input

That pump should just be circulation pump for the heating system. Try disconnecting it , go for a drive watch the temp gauge. You should be OK.

M5S5,

Thanks for the quick reply! I have disconnected it and it seems to be fine, and much quieter. There is lot of "stuff" hanging off of this pump, does anybody know what it all is ??

Not sure. How many wires going to it? If it has more than 2 it could also have heat valve built into it. In that case you would not have any heat control. Can you take a photo & post it?

Default Pump Picture

Taking a picture proved difficult because it is buried so deep. I found the attached on the net.

The cylindrical unit at "6 o'clock" is what I believe is the circulating pump and is what was making the noise and what I have disconnected.

The two upright cylinders at "9 o'clock" each have an electrical feed and remain plugged in. (the beige plug is what feeds them)

Any conformation would be appreciated.

Yes it does look like it has the heat valves are attached. But if they are on a different connector you should be good. You will probably experience heat that is not as hot as it should be.

M5S5,

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not all that concerned about the heat, that's the beauty of Southern Arizona!

I am thankful for this very valuable forum and people like you for providing this information.

Thanks again!
