cam chain tensioner

cam chain tensioner
I was looking around the engine and I noticed that right below thecam chain tensioner on the rear of the motor there is a half circle which looks like the half circle below the valve cover which is filled in by a gasket that I just replaced. When I stick my finger in the half circle below thecam chain tensioner i feel the gasket but its sticking in about 1/2 inch. Should the cam chain tensioner gasket be sitting flush with the head like the valve cover gasket is. I wish I could get my pictures to upload. But all of you who have replaced these gaskets will know what I'm talking about. Thanks

RE: cam chain tensioner
If your looking at it from the back of the head there should be about a 1/2 gap yes, the half moon seal sitts in a little crevice thats directly below the chain tensioner. Some people actually fill the gap with sealant as a cheap fix for oil leaks.

RE: cam chain tensioner
I am in the process of replacing the valve cover gaskets and the cam chain tensioner gaskets. I have never done this before and I am having troubles. Do I have to completely remove the tensioners, and if I do, how do I get them out? I tried a search, but after an hour of looking with no success, I am getting very frustrated. If someone could give me step-by-step instructions or show me where some instructions are, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Joe
