Default New S4 owner - Check engine light CEL

So after owning a MB E-class and a Jaguar XK-8 convertible, I decided to get a S4 convertible. I saw a 2005 S4 Convertible.

· Model year 2005
· Production date late July 2004
· In service date Dec 2004
· Engine code BHF
· Transmission code HHU
· Model S4 Conv.quat.4.2 V825
· Sales model 8H754L

Audi Certified Pre-Owned warranty. Had 20500 miles on the car. So I traded my Jag for it. That was little over a week ago.

After about 200 miles, I get the Check engine light. Took it back to the dealer and the service tech connected the OBT reader and mumbled something about sporadic misfires. They reset it and told me to see if it happens again.

So the light would come on solid. Now, when I start it cold, the CEL would flash for about 15 to 20 seconds before going solid. The car would also really shake and I can feel every misfire. Even when it is warmed up, the car idles rough. Also, it acts like it just lost 100 hp. So I dropped it off at the dealer on Sat. I am waiting for a call on Monday to see what the issue is.

Now, from my experience with other German and English cars, this means – plugs, plug wiring, coils, o2 sensors, etc. Mostly emission stuff or need a tune up really bad.

So, any ideas? Real bummer that this happened after only having the car for a week. Good thing for the warranty but still hate to have the car at the dealer.

Yes, coils are a big one, this sounds more like a 200,000 mi car then a 20k mi car. deffinatly get that sorted out at the dealer while you can? how long is the warentee?

Chances are it's plug/coil related.
It will cause all that you describe.

I have until Dec 2008 for the Standard Warrenty and the CPO goes to Dec of 2010 (up to 100,000 miles). So I better take advantage of the Audi Warrenty ;-}.

Let's see what the dealer says the issue is. I am thinking of getting my own Diag tool to read the codes. Any recommendations? Also, I'm in the Chicago area so if someone has one, i'll like to see it in action before ordering.

I will check out Vag-com.

I just got my car back from the dealer. It was the coil for #5. How often do these need to be replaced? The car is only 2 years old and 20K miles.
