Unhappy Engine missfiring, oil on spark plug electrode 99' A6 2.8L

Hi,
after getting a cylinder 3 missfire code I pulled the spark plug and the electrode end is COVERED in oil. This is the only spark plug that is oily. The car doesn't perform as it used to and my gas mileage is down. I did some research and what I understand is that it could be worn/broken piston rings or leaking valve seals is this right? Can I replace the valve seals without taking the engine apart or should I just sell the car? There are 91K miles on it. Thanks guys!

Thanks, but if I do need to replace any internal parts I won't be using used ones.

Valve seals are vary easy, though if you dont work on cars, I'd take it in.

Do you think that will solve the problem?

Well.. seals dont just suddenly die... I'd start by seeing if you have spark to the plug and going from there.

After you get it going, then check around for someone to fix the seals as there does seem to be some leaking.

sounds like the valve cover gasket is bad. The gasket part around the spark plugs is letting oil into the spark plug chamber. Pretty common and just repaired myself.

But how would the oil get past the threads into the cylinder? The oil it on the electrode end of the spark plug.

Is it really oil? Did you check to see if your spark plug is working? How about your coil?

Do you mean into the combustion chamber? If you mean the cylinder where the the spark plug goes into, where the coil pack hooks up to the spark plug, then it would get in through the valve cover gasket around the spark plug cylinder.

If it'll help look at this link of a valve cover gasket and notice the inner gasket that seals the valve cover to the head around the spark plug cylinder.
