Default A problem with my 10 valve quattro...

Hi guys hopefully someone can help me out. Bear in mind I'm no mechanic! Basically the car misfires at low revs and idle when its cold. Not so bad once warm. And higher up the revs it seems fine. The previous owner changed the timing belt recently, could the timing be out? I did find a split wire that goes to a valve under the throttle body area that I've repaired. Could plugs/leads/ignition be an issue? Why would it be ok (ish) when warm? The battery is goosed, could that be part of the problem?
