Default Looking to buy S4

I'm looking to buy an S4 (b5) and I have already checked out some tuning sites and this forum's faq, but I have some more questions, some that might be added to faq.
What is the power limits of the engine and trans (man, and auto)?
I know it depends on driving habits and all that, but I came from an STi and stock engine could handle 450hp no prob and the transmission/drivetrain was virtually indestructible.
It seems the 2001.5 is the best year, but are there any minor engine/ transmission improvements that were made along the way?
Thanks for the help

Read the FAQ, other than that the engine and transmission are good for just about 500whp. But there have been issues with the transmission, mostly caused by the driver, but it's still a weak point: bad synchronizers which develop a slight bur around the edge caused by the shift collar. The FAQ should explain the other issues.

Hi all,

First post here. I am also thinking to buy an S4 soon, I hope. I had a 2001 A4 years ago, and always regretting selling her.....same sad ol' story =/

Anyways, I am wondering how you can tell the diff between an early 2001, and a 2001.5? Can you tell from the vin? Does the absence of chrome mirrors imply the vehicle is older than 2001.5? Any other obvious indicators? ESP was offered in 2001 I think, but before 2001.5?

Thanks,
-Leslie

i have an 01.5 and no chrome mirrors. the quickest easiest way is to check the logo on the trunk and on the grill. the 01.5 and newer have the S4 logo still used today. the older models have the red stripe with the 2 chrome stripes. yes people can change their old badges for new ones but most dont

Ok, so the car I just looked at is a 2001, but not a 2001.5. Has 73K miles, timing belt has not been replaced yet, but I am thinking about buying it =)

I will be doing the timing belt right away. Is there any other advice or concerns you can provide with this model-year and mileage?

Thank you!!!!

BTW, anyone know a good shop in the Seattle/Bellevue/Tacoma area??
