Wink About changing AT fluid for 04 A6, 3.0 engine

I am planing to change transmission fluid. I called local dealer and was told my AT is CVT type which has no filter and non-service type transmission.

My question is: Is it a good idea to remove the pan and clean it up inside or is not necessary?

Please give me your thoughts. Thanks.

Changing your tranny fluid is always a good idea, especially for the CVT transmission. In the earlier year C5 A6 CVT, I think the recommended interval was 30k miles, twice as frequent as the non-CVT transmissions. In 2002 or 2003 they labeled them lifetime fluids to keep the overall maintenance costs down as a selling point. I'm not sure, but the I think the only place you can get the special fluid is the dealer. It is different from the quattro tranny fluid and I think it is around $20 a liter. You'll probably need 4-6 liters. Since I don't have the CVT, please don't rely on my guesses for price, availability, and quantity. Find youself a good local independant Audi specialist and they will know all the answers.

Dealers tell you that the unit is not to be serviced so they can sell you a replacement one when yours burns up. Good for their service department, bad for you.

At the beginning, I did not realize there is so much for Audi transmission fluid. just could not image why the fluids are so tricky. blauparts.com/Pentosin fluids are most people use. I called Pentosin and was told they do not have fluid for CVT. I know Febi makes fluids for CVT, but I am not sure if their fluids are good. Febi's price is half of the dealer's price. Audi dealer only gave me Audi p.n 18082, but did not tell me the manufacturer.

If not, Febi's fluid should be just fine! don't be scared about changing the fluid. the bad thing is NOT changing it!

I agree with you. Actually, eople on the ebay say both Pentosin and Febi are Audi OEMs. That should be good enough. I got Febi's from car-stuff.com for $12.95/liter with free shipping for 7 liters.

thanks for your replies.
