i have a 1991 90 that i fort an a leaky heater matrix, turned out it was just a seal on the bulkhead. 1st thing you need to do i make absolutly sure the matrix is leaking ie checkin the coolant and c if the level is going down. mine was leaking under the carpet from up behind the centre of the dash down and settleing in the passenger foot well giving the illusion of a leaky matrix. When it pissed down and it was parked facing down hill. if this is the case park facingup hill. if your blowers are blowing cold air when the engine is hot this is a definate sign of a knackered matrix. The heater matrix is fairly difficult to remove as it involves removing most of the centre console and surrounding cowling to do properly to ensure the new unit dosent leak it is also tricky to renconect all the bits for the heater kobs ( remeber this is audi and not the mosteasy cars to work on). in the haynes manual the difficulty is 3 out of 5 stars 1 bein very easy and 5 bein dealer only. soif you can pay a garage it might be worth considering if that helps

It is about a ten hour job for a knowledgeable shop to remove the center console and dash to replace the heater core. They do leak with age and the leak shows up as coolant in the passenger footwell.
