I need to get a first car for my teenager.  Looking at maybe an 80, 90 or 200, late 80's or early 90's model.  How reliabe is the Audi auto-trans?  Any good websites you could recommend for me to do some more research.

TIA

The Audi auto matics suck, except for when you get to the 4 speed Quattro Autos found in the V8Q's.  You definitely want a 5 speed.  Out of the 9 Audi's I've owned, the 5speeds never failed.

I've got about 3 Audi's for sale, if you're still looking.

audi is the way to go.  My 16 year old son had an accident - police report said the car went airborn for atleast 70 feet and landed on the roof - car was totaled but the passenger compartment remained intact.  He wound up hanging from the seat belt and the only "injury" was when he bumped his head after releasing the seat belt.  He crawled out the back window that had popped out.  I got him another car a few weeks later - you guessed it, it was an Audi.  Oh yea, the cd player never skipped  a beat.

i have an audi right now it is a 1990 a8 quattro.  this is the one with a v8. my question being is that this car has 110,000 miles on it and the transmission went out.  i called audi and they said it would be 6500 to fix. then a neighbor, macanic, gave me a name of a friend of his. i called the shop and they said they could rebuild it for around 1800 and if it was real bad like a cracked or broken case it would be 2200.  does this sound about right?  also i am worried that if i fix it i might just have more problems with it. do you guys think i will. also if any one is intrested in taking it off my hands fell free to let me know.  i will give you the name of the shop.  they said it would come with a 3 yr. warrenty.

This post is a little late I believe, but hey why the heck not. I'm 20 and have driven my 1990 100 quattro since I could drive. It just rolled over 185k began at 159k. 5-spd. I'm not sure if it's got the original clutch though. That would be pretty outstanding if it was. I had to get some bushings in the gearbox replaced about 8 months ago. The shifter was popping up, toward the ceiling if I pulled on it. It still worked though. I think I'm just brutal to all manuals though. I can already feel the thing going again. I've been taking it easy lately though. She's been responding well. I want this car to last. I also want to prove to a domestic car buff that foreign is way better in every aspect. hehe. happy driving. peace.
