K & N Air Filter
I was told by a friend of mine (a good mechanical engineer) that the K & N air filters are not really that superior to the OEM or aftermarket air filters. The reason many people experience performance gain (as he says) is that people normally replace the dirty OEM filter with a new K & N which gives the impression that a performance has been gained. Overall the performance may be about 2-3 HP as to the claimed 10+ HP or more claimed by K & N. Also he mentioned that because of the nature of the K&N filter, it doesn't attenuate as much of the engine noise as the OEM filter does and therefore the engine sounds noisier. I'm wondering about other people's opinion on this matter.

RE: K & N Air Filter
Hes right .
I have one in my 03 A4 .. it does nothing . 10 HP ? haha More like 1 if that. Didnt notice sound either. |
RE: K & N Air Filter
i got the K&N air filter b/c it was pretty cheap and it didnt void the warrany, u can use it over and over again, it also improved my gas mileage

RE: K & N Air Filter
So it did improve your gas mileage because it was a performance filter or just simply because you changed your dirty filter with a new one?
Just curious.... |
RE: K & N Air Filter
i think a little bit of both, i'll let u guys know in the long run
|
RE: K & N Air Filter
I have use K&N on all my cars and only noticed any reall gains when it
was used with a free flow exaust. |
RE: K & N Air Filter
It's interesting that you said that, I was told while ago that as well. It may be related to the bottlenecks that exist whithin the system (air intake and exhaust). How much HP do you think you gained by doing both?
Also I'm wondering about what mods can be done to the 2.8Lt 12V engine to give it some juice? The engine seems to be a little underpowered. A price list would be highly appreciated! Kianoosh |
RE: K & N Air Filter
87 blazer 15 hp
87 Grand National 35 hp 93 taurus SHO 17 hp all with aftermarket exaust and K&N my audi only has the K&N at the moment its worth the money, its lasts |
RE: K & N Air Filter
It does last, but then again, it cost about 5 times the aftermarket ones!!! So unless you use more than 5 regular air filters, it's not really saving anything on the maintenance side. I wonder how much a performance exhaust system costs for a 2.8V6? Anyone has switched to a performance exhaus on the 2.8V6?
