Default K & N Air Filter

I was told by a friend of mine (a good mechanical engineer) that the K & N air filters are not really that superior to the OEM or aftermarket air filters. The reason many people experience performance gain (as he says) is that people normally replace the dirty OEM filter with a new K & N which gives the impression that a performance has been gained. Overall the performance may be about 2-3 HP as to the claimed 10+ HP or more claimed by K & N. Also he mentioned that because of the nature of the K&N filter, it doesn't attenuate as much of the engine noise as the OEM filter does and therefore the engine sounds noisier. I'm wondering about other people's opinion on this matter.

So it did improve your gas mileage because it was a performance filter or just simply because you changed your dirty filter with a new one?

Just curious....

It's interesting that you said that, I was told while ago that as well. It may be related to the bottlenecks that exist whithin the system (air intake and exhaust). How much HP do you think you gained by doing both?

Also I'm wondering about what mods can be done to the 2.8Lt 12V engine to give it some juice? The engine seems to be a little underpowered.

A price list would be highly appreciated!

It does last, but then again, it cost about 5 times the aftermarket ones!!! So unless you use more than 5 regular air filters, it's not really saving anything on the maintenance side. I wonder how much a performance exhaust system costs for a 2.8V6? Anyone has switched to a performance exhaus on the 2.8V6?
