Check the bushings and linkages for wear or damage. A misalign transmission/engine could give you problems as well, check for worn or missing engine mounts, bolts, etc. Can you put the car in reverse gear when the engine is not running?

If you take it to a shop it is hard to say what the labor will run but any half-competent shop should be able to put on a lift and see if the shifter is at lest engaging all the way. They should also be able to check everything else that I have mentioned. I have never verified this but I have heard that Audi doesn't sell any internal Quattro transmission parts they only sell complete new ones!!!

Things like seals are available but synchros and gears might be a different story. Hopefully none of us will need to travel down that road.

I have to go into the dealership and pick up some parts sometime this week, so if I remember I ask them about it.
