Transmission Question - 9/16/2004 3:30:54 PM

I was wondering if u guys had any idea whats going on with my tranmission. My transmission shifts smoothly into first and 2nd reverse and 5th with relative ease. I dont know whats going on with 3rd and 4th bececause every time i try going in it revs as if it were in first or second. The car is an 1985 4k. Any ideas?

Hard to say but check all your linkages first. Sometimes bushings get worn, cotter pins fall out, etc. If the motor or trans mounts wear out you can get everything out of alignment with the shifter. I actually had this problem on my SAAB.

Yea i have asked around and i have heard everything from needing a new tranny to just checking the shift linkage. I hope the that the 3rd and 4th accentuators arent broken because i think that would mean i would have to rebuild transmission. I think its the shift linkage though at least i hope. Also do any of you know the stock horse power of my car and some quick after markets for it.

I would assume 130HP, 140Torque if it has the 5cyl 10v. And quick after markets, well ummmmm nothing, at least not that you will have noticable gains from. Check some older posts in the folder. Lots of people have asked questions about the 2.3 10v.

yea its def a 5 cyl but ive heard 115 i dont know if there is any truth because it does a 9.2 0-60 back in its day i think ud need more that 115 to do that with the 4k

I would still check the linkages you might be engaging 1 and 2 gear not 3 and 4. The gates between 1-2, 3-4 and 5-R are very narrow it doesn’t take much to miss it. If you broke something most likely you would hear grinding noise and it would show up in your gear oil. Did you check the oil?

The 4K uses a 2.22L 5-Cyl JT engine with 8.5:1 CR rated at 115 BHP. The 4K is rather light, I had an '84 4000S 1.8L I4 with 3-sp auto and it was not a slouch.

Thanks ill check that i might just be missing those throw because grinding is really not and issue. I know it was hard to get into reverse at first but that i just realized i wasnt throwing it far enough over. I hope this is the case. I am kind of an amatuer when it comes to maintencing a car. How would i check the gear oil? Thanks youve been quite a been of help.

Also I have noticed that the its 0-60 is faster than and 88 q and thats a 2.3 and that just goes to prove hp isnt everything. One more thing should i be worried about burning the cluch out if the friction point is really high in the car. I have heard the cluches are industructable. THanks again

The 80/90 is considerably more heavier than the older 4K's.

From what I have found if you are comparing both the Quattro versions the 4k is only about 100 pounds lighter

I am not sure how accurate those numbers are between 4KQ and 80Q. I have read in the past that depending on various trim levels and options, 200 - 300lbs is more like it when comparing a 4KQ to a 90Q. Something that is not mentioned in the links. Options like power heated leather seats, power moon roof, etc. I will have to double check but if I recall correctly my specs don’t match the ones given for the '91 100Q!

I have seen 2906 on a few different sites, the weight may be wrong but I really dont think that there is a 2-300 pound weight difference in just adding options. The 80/90Q come standard with just about everything, other than things like leather, heated seats, and power moonroof. But if you have some other sources i would love to read them.

Check the GRVW rating stamped on your car and also in the owners manual that came with your car. Mine don't jive with the Audiworld specs.

i still dont understand how the 4k can beat the 80 in a 0-60 or quarter. doesnt it have 130 i haveheard 15 more than the 4k. Even though its too is a ten valve 5 cyl. SO do they have equal hp or does another factor seperate the two.

It comes down to usable power, gear ratio, tires, etc. Just because you are putting out 130 ponies doesn’t mean much, many things like parasitic draw affect how much you are actually putting down to the pavement. The figures one needs to really look at is HP at the wheel and not at the crank!

this is true but one would figure a better engine with the 2.3 maybe better piston compression. Maybe the 4k has more lowend toque im not sure of the specs. I def see what your saying though

The 80q runs mid 8's 0-60. the fwd and 4cyl versions run in the 9's. If you live near by we can line them up some time. haha find out on the "road course"

IS that some sort of challange haha. WHat are the specs on your car check out this see what it says for 0-60. some of the 80's are faster but most arent. I dont know how accurate this is. I think of the 4k as more of a crusier and a backroads car rather than a drag car.

lol it was more of a joke then a challenge. Just look at the link I posted for the specs, and its the same time i have seen else where. 8.5 0-60... But anyways I would have to agree on the cruising rather than drag for most audis. Especially the N/A engines. Never the less it doesnt stop me from racing a guy at the light. Especially if its a civic. 8op
