Hi people. I am new to this forum.

I have a problem with my Audi 80, 1.9 TDI from 1992.

When I bought the car the temp. was constantly at 80. One year ago I got problems with the temp. going up to about 95 under heavy load. I contacted my Audi dealer, which changed pump and thermostat, but the problem was still there. They then told me that the water was leaking into the engine, and that this repair would cost 2,500$.

I went to another mechanic who told me that the problem was not with the water leaking into the engine's oil, but he was unable to fix my problem.

Then came winther, and it got a little better, so I didn't worry about it, until this summer, when the problem again got worse.

When I drive up-hill I get temp. around 95, which is too much. Sometimes it reaches 100.

Anyone got any ideas? How high temp. can the car take before I should worry about it?

There are 2 fans in the front. When are these supposed to start working? Yesterday I started the car in the carage, and the temp. got up to 100 degrees, but the fans were not moving. Is this normal?

Overall it seems that the car enjoys beeing between 80 and 95 degrees. If I don't put load on the car, the temp. will fall to 80. When driving up-hill it goes up to 95 - 100.

It may be simple as a fan switch, also check if thermostat is open when hot, just check if bottom hose is hot.
It also might be simple as fuse, chech them first.
then if okey just turn the key on, dont start the car just light up the panel, disconnect fan switch and shorten it so that it would start the fan. if works its good, doesn't bad. check the ground and positive wires under and on driver side in front.

Check the obvious first. Check the radiator so that you can see through the fins and that the fins are not corroded and/or disintegrated. Then check the duct work, on some models there might be air ducts and deflectors. Often these either break or fall apart. Next is the thermo switch. I don't know if the TDI is equipped with a single, dual or even triple stage cooling fan. All three stages should work. The temperature(s) should be stamped on the body of the switch. If you have a continuity meter and thermometer, drop it in boiling water and see if it works.

I see some dirt in the radiator. I can post a picture on the web, so you can have a look at it.

A few days ago I tried running the car hot in the garage. The bottom hose got really hot when the temp. got to around 100, but not before.

I am not much of a car mechanic, but am interested in learning, so I will do my best with these suggestions and a little help from my mechanic-friend :)

I went out and bought me a new thermoswitch. It's part number 191959481C.

The one that is in the car currently is 191959481A, and was put in by the Audi dealer 1½ year ago, when they tried to fix my problem.

It says:

95 102
---- ----
84 91

On my new switch. Why so many degrees? When should the fan start?

If I remember the part numbering scheme correctly 191959481A and 191959481C should be the same I think the last letter is production plant or origin. The 95 102 is the temperature, first stage is 95C to turn on second stage is 102C. 84 91 could be the date code, 84th day 1991.

Ok, thanks for the info.

I got the fan working with the new thermoswitch, although the Audi dealer changed it 1½ ago.

So now I look forward to going for a long drive uphill, and seeing if this will fix my problem.

Should the temp. lay constantly on 90, or should it move a little around? And if so, how much?

It seems to go up to 90 when I give it some gass, but when I idle it heads down towards 80 or 85 again. In other cars I see the temp. staying constantly on a single point, no matter how I drive.

I have problems too, when I stand or accelerate to like 30 MPH in like 5 sec temp rises up to 95C. when I drive it constant on 30MPH it staies like 90 - 92 C if I drive like >45MPH temp is like 87C-89C

ok. What range is normal for the car?

When should I start to worry?

Mine doesn't heat or cool that fast. It takes a few minutes for it to heat up when I put gas on it.

mine too. the temp should stay firm on 90C I believe. If you in trafick it should rise just a bit so that 1 speed turns on. on higway it should stay a bit lower that 90 C. This is how it should be. on young models temp stayes always 90C

I have no update regarding the overheating yet, but I have another question regarding heat..

When I drive slow-city-driving or idle the car, the temp. seems to stay at 80, how could this be?

Thermostat should open at 88, thermoswitch at 95, so what could cause the temp. to stay at 80?

Is there any other thing that could cool the car at 80?

when this hapens, open the hood and check the botom hose if it is hot, if it is hot then the sensor is bad and probably when you drive under load then your temp is about 110 or even hoter. if it is like cold or just a bit warm then your thermostat is opening to early. or just stuk open which can happen over time.

When I drive the card harder, I reach 90 (hopefully it wont go above 95 anymore [:D]

But it seems to have a preference for about 80, as it gets up to 80 and then hangs until I push it somewhat hard.

When I reach 90, and then go back to some slow city-driving, it tends to go towards 80 again.

Today when I drove home, the temp. was at 80 when I got home. The upper hose was hot, but the lower one was cold at the bottom and a little warm on top. I guess this is because it gets heated from the outside at the top.

Have you checked the "V" belts on the front end ? One of them drives both Power Assisted Steering and the water pump, slippage on this belt may be the cause.

Hi There Just Registered Wondering If Anyone Can Help Me I Just Arrived Home A Hour Ago My Heater In the car was blowing cold air for about 15 miles so i kept a eye on the temperature  gauge which was at its normal but when i arrived home there was smoke coming from my bonnet lifted it up and the was oil everywhere all over the water bottle and battery and under the battery is covered anyway it looks like it has overheated and ran out of water so i let it cool and filled up the water bottle and drove it less than 2 miles home and it is running fine and raging with power when u put the foot down so any ideas i thought head gasket had blew but power is there any help would be great cheers
