Default Buying A6 Any Tips?

I have been looking extensively at getting an A6. I was wondering if anyone could give me some simple insights on some questions that I have.

-What is practical blended gas mileage on a 2.8 Auto versus a 2.7 Auto versus a 2.7 Manual.

-What are the pros and cons to the 2.8 and 2.7 drivetrains (from a reliability and maintnence standpoint)

-Is there anything that I should specifically keep an eye out for that is a common problem with this platform?

I am possibly buying a 2000 A6 2.8 with the cold weather package, Xenons, Bose, and every other option. The only problems I've found with it are a slightly scuffed up door molding (the very thin strip half way up the passenger side door) and the display on the stereo head unit has one line that doesnt illuminate. How difficult is it to replace that molding and display on the radio? Does anyone have any experience doing either? The car has 62k miles and the dealer is asking $12,990.

Thanks for any input!

Default RE: Buying A6 Any Tips?

I've got a 2000 Avant W/ 2.8 - 80K miles.
1) Side molding shouldn't be a problem - parts readily available.
2) Dash and radio digital display problems are well-documented in these car's. I doubt if you could find a '99-'01 that DOESN'T have some of the display messed up. Replacing new would probably be mucho bucks. Locating a used display would be easy, but any used one you would buy would possiibly have the same problem.
3)Engine - You'll need to replace the timing belt @ around 80k - 90K miles. Dlr job around $1300 - 1500. I got a quote from a good independent mechanic shop for around $900.
.
Do a search on this forum - you'll find lots of other information, and info on the 2.7T as well.
.
If I didn't want a wagon, I'd go for the 2.7T myself.

Oil leaks. Thisll be a tough one because of the belly pan. It holds all the oil so you wont see it on the ground. Make sure the upper links and tie rod boots arent torn. Checke the front and rear propshaft seals for leaks.
