i had the same thing (i think) disconnected air mass meter (check out
www.wak-tt.com and look for MAF stuff to show how to do it) turned ignition on but not started car, waited for all the beeps / clicks to finish so i knew the initialisations were complete (throttle bodies i think) and then took it for a spin, no probs whatsoever so i have ordered a new MAF from ebay, £50 delivered next day!
that site lists how to remove the MAF and clean it, cleaning didnt work for me but give them both a go and see how you get on, but if you blow anything up please dont blame me! (just a disclaimer there :-)

p.s - it didnt cause any CEL or warning lights for me, which was handy but annoying that the car didnt know.....
